Registration as a drone operator

If you operate a drone in Denmark, it is required of you to be registered as a drone operator. On this page, you can read more about how to register as a drone operator.

When should you register?

Anyone who owns a drone in Denmark must register as a drone operator with the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority unless that drone is marketed as a toy or under 250 g and not equipped with a sensor. You only need to register once, even if you own multiple drones. For EU citizens you should apply and register in your home country as a registration in one EU member state is valid in all EU member states.

As a drone operator, you are responsible for:

  • Having the proper certification.
  • The remote pilot has the proper certification if you lent out your drone
  • Ensuring the drone is registered if needed
  • Ensuring the drone is insured.
  • Maintaining the drone in accordance with national regulations and the drone manual.

You should register as a drone operator

  • If the drone weighs above 250 grams
  • If the drone weighs under 250 g and is equipped with a sensor, such as a camera, lidar sensor, thermal sensor, etc.

You should not register as a drone operator

  • If the drone weighs under 250 g and is not equipped with a sensor
  • If the drone is marketed as a toy drone – even if it is equipped with a sensor.

How to register as a drone operator

What do you need to have ready when registering as a drone operator?

Before you start the registration process, ensure that you have purchased insurance. During the registration, you will need to provide your insurance policy number and insurance provider:

  • If your insurance company covers your drone under your home and liability insurance, you must provide that policy number.
  • If you have a separate insurance policy for your drone, you must provide the policy number for that specific insurance. Read more about insurance below.

How to Register:

  1. Click the link below to register as a drone operator.
  2. Log in with your personal MitID/NemID.
  3. Once you have registered as a drone operator, you will receive confirmation of your registration via Digital Post/E-Boks/Mit.dk.
  4. If you do not use Digital Post, you must specify an address where you wish to receive your operator registration number physically. It may take up to 30 days to receive the physical letter.
  5. In the confirmation letter, you will be provided with your drone operator registration ID number and a security code.
  6. Afterwards, you must label all drones you own with your registration ID number.

Label your drone with the registration operator ID number

Once you have registered as a drone operator, you will be assigned a unique drone operator ID number, which must be applied to all drones you operate. If your drone is currently labeled with your drone certificate number, it must be replaced. The certificate number is no longer valid for labeling your drone.

Security Code

As a registered drone operator, you will also receive a security code, which should not be shared with others. This code ensures that others cannot misuse your drone operator ID number by labeling their drone with it and operating under your responsibility. This will also be needed together with your drone registration operator ID number for setting up RemoteID (if applicable).

Change of Ownership

In the event of a change of ownership, the registration number must be removed from the drone. The new owner must apply their own drone operator registration number.

Unregistering as a Danish Drone Operator

If you have a Danish Drone Operator ID number issued by Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority and wish to deregister, you are required to send an email to info@trafikstyrelsen.dk with your drone operator ID and request, with >Deregister UAS OP(Case number)< in the title.

 

Drone insurance

 If your drone is not considered a toy drone, your flights must be insured. Having insurance for your drone is essential to comply with legislation, protect yourself and others in the event of accidents or damage, and ensure a safe and secure flying experience.

Under the Danish Drone Regulation, all drone operators are required to have liability insurance that covers any damage caused by the drone during flight. For drones above 250 grams they must be insured for a minimum of 0.75 million SDR (Special Drawing Rights), which is equivalent to approximately DKK 7 million. For drones belov 250 grams the amount can be determined by the insurrance company.

If you're unsure whether your home or personal liability insurance covers drone flights, you should contact your insurance provider. It is important to note that not all insurance companies offer drone-specific coverage.
